How long does a bedroom wall take to dry after a leak?

June 2, 2010 - 5:07 pm 2 Comments

I had a leak from my shower into the adjacent bedroom recently. The shower leak is now well fixed, I have been told by the tradesmen. This was completed 3 weeks ago. The wall in the bedroom has been replastered and repainted within the last week. It still smells damp, and small bubbles are on the paint. Is it possible that this is residual water and the wall has not had a chance to dry properly? Or do we have an unfixed leak?

Sounds like they never gave your wall a chance to throughly dry. The outside in the room may have been dry but the inside where the joists are is still wet and the moisture wicked to the outside. You’ll need to open up the wall and let it dry out completely before sealing it back up. whoever did the wall reapir should do this for free since they’re the ones that messed it up by not ensuring the wall was dry before plaster and paint.

How do you insulate bedroom over garage and cold closets?

May 31, 2010 - 3:00 am 5 Comments

I have recently purchased a 10 year old home and have very cold closets that I can’t seem to keep warm in the winter. We have 2 bedroom located over the garage that are also not staying warm

Does anyone have any tips or tricks that can offer to help with this problem?
We have replaced the windows in the bedroom which has helped a little but i have noticed that if I put my hand next to the wall that is facing the outside it feels very cold. Like there might not be little to no insulation… but then again first time home owner so I don’t know what I am talking about!

Can someone please offer some advance or who might be able to answer this question? What kind of professional takes care of these kinds of issues?

Probably no insulation in the walls. Drill holes in various spots in the exterior walls and shine a flashlight in to check for insulation. This applies to both the closets and the bedrooms. Also in the bedrooms over the garage is the ceiling in the garage covered with sheet-rock or anything? If so drill there also the floor may not be insulated. Any insulation company can come in and install insulation with either Batts or blowing it in. You could even do the same. One thing you will have to find out is if there are fire breaks in the ceiling and or walls. If not for the walls cut a 12 inch section out of the middle and push the batts both up and down into the cavity. In the ceiling unless you are good at sheet-rock repair call someone in to do them. Anyone could do the batts however you might run into plumbing and electric that would make you think you have filled the cavity and leave gaps.

My bedroom has a dark green carpet, no curtains yet, what color comforter set will work?

May 28, 2010 - 10:04 am 8 Comments

My bedroom has a dark green carpet, light green wall, no curtains yet, what curtain and conforter set color would work?(the color of the bed and the dresser is wood dark brown)

I would suggest a patterned fabric for either your comforter or your curtains. The other could be of a plain cream or white. This will make a nice contrast against your dark furniture.

How can I turn my three bedroom house in to a movie studio?

May 25, 2010 - 4:14 pm 3 Comments

So I know, huge question, let me layout more details. I will need one bedroom for sleeping, the kitchen and bathroom are off limits. I was thinking about turning one bedroom in to a flexible set and the other smaller bedroom in to an editing room.

For the set room what kind of lights, camera, tripod, back drops etc. should I be looking at?

For the editing room what kind of computer, software, other hardware would I need? What about monitors and other peripherals should I look at getting?

What about other rooms (basement, living room, dining room, backyard, etc.) Any ideas how I could use them?

Any and all suggestions welcomed, thanks!

if your for real start by asking movie makers in yahoo answers, we are photographers – still pictures not moving

that said you have got a little lucky, i am also a professional TV Camera Operator, dont do it much now as I make enough doing other things.

a bed room wont be big enough! you need maybe 3 2000w (blonde) lights and maybe 3 800w (redhead) lights, put them in the corners, a camera operator, director, DOP, Assistant Director, Sound Recordist/Engineer,Camera, Dolly, Tripod, Monitor, Talent – are you crazy what are you all going to sit on each other?

as far as studio goes they tend to be at least three times the size of what you see on TV!

Ive convinced myself you are joking so thats it bye

How should I organize the storage in my bedroom?

May 19, 2010 - 3:40 am 3 Comments

I live in New York and have a small one bedroom apartment. The old tenants put up a "loft" for storage against one of the walls – right now I have some games, winter clothes, and other miscellaneous items up there. However, it’s starting to make my bedroom look like a garage. Any ideas that are not too expensive to make my bedroom look like a serene bedroom and not like a storage locker? Thanks!

maybe take down the shelves/loft and get those drawers that go underneath ur bed (similar to what alot of dorms have) use pictures or hanging mirrors or something artistic and pretty to draw attention away from any hardware u have in there and bring the focus back to ur fabulous studio…place some nice scented candles, a vase of fake flowers , some throw pillows and accent pieces around the room
