How to changing a bachelors bedroom into a couples bedroom?

May 15, 2010 - 7:18 pm 4 Comments

I just moved in with my boyfriend and want to redecorate the bedroom, however i don’t know what colors to choose. I don’t want the room to be too feminine or masculine. Whats an appropriate medium? The bedroom has no windows, and with the current dark colors on the walls it feels like a cave! HELP!!!

use neutral colors like shades of brown, golds, and ambers then use accent colors for the bedspread, pillows etc in colors you both like. get some large modern mirrors to make the room feel more open (placing them strategicly by the bed will intrigue your man ;p )

How do you decorate a bedroom to make it brighter?

May 12, 2010 - 6:42 pm 6 Comments

I have cherry wood bedroom furniture and I used burgundy/light green color scheme but I want to revamp my room when I move soon.

I’m going to keep the same bedroom furniture but is there a way to make the bedroom brighter and more cheery? Any good suggestions? I was thinking of buying new sheets/comforter in a different color? What other accessories/ideas could I use to achieve this goal?

The walls are light colored and I’m not interested in painting them.

Lots of lighting. If you can get a new lamp. and some smaller lights that would help. Also mirrors make a room look bigger and brighter. Maybe yellow, or a lighter blue for room colors or blanket colors. That’s a bright color. Stay away from reds and dark colors. also cherry wood is kind of dark. you could get a floor rug for your room.

If I combine 2 bedrooms, then build a bedroom in our finished basement will it lower our home value?

We want to make our master bedroom bigger. Instead of building on, we can knock down a wall to combine the master bedroom with a second bedroom. The bedroom we use for our master bedroom extension can be moved downstairs in our finished basement. The number of bedrooms in the house will be the same that we started with, will this still lower our home value?

Yes, it could lower the value of your house…at least as far as the listing.

My mother was a real estate agent. She told me you can’t list any bedroom or bathrooms that are in a basement. At least that was true a few decades ago. I’m not sure if it’s still true or not. You might call a real estate agent and ask them.

If you do call an agent, I would pretend you are interested in selling the house now and ask if you can list a basement bedroom. I would NOT tell them you are simply asking prior to remodeling. They won’t waste their time on you if you say that.

Assuming you can’t list basement bedrooms, your house would basically lose a bedroom in its listing should you try to sell it.

Then again, people looking at your house would see the new bedroom in the basement and realize the house had more bedrooms than the listing showed.

Personally? I would do what makes you comfortable living in the house now and worry about selling it later, but that’s just me.

Does a bedroom have to have a window in PA?

May 5, 2010 - 4:21 pm 5 Comments

I live in an apartment that was listed as a 2 bedroom. One of the bedrooms does not have a window. Is there supposed to be a window for emergencies or ventilation? Does anyone know the laws for this sort of thing?

You do need to have ventalation in a beedroom. But more important you need egress. At least one window in each bedroom must be of sufficient size to permit the occupants to escape a fire and also to allow a fully outfitted firefighter to enter.

An egress window must satisfy all four Internatioinal Residential Code (IRC) criteria:

Minimum width of opening: 20 in.
Minimum height of opening: 24 in.
Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor).
Maximum sill height above floor: 44 in.

So if it doesn’t ahve this it’s not a bedroom. A simple call to your local bulding department can confirm this.

How many bedroom plants would it take to replace the amount of oxygen consumed by an average human at night?

May 3, 2010 - 2:08 pm 1 Comment

Are there any studies on this, with actual numbers. I’m interested in determining how many Mother-in-laws tongue or aloe vera (bedroom plants) i need per person in a bedroom to replace the oxygen

Actually, funny thing is that at night plants actually use oxygen too. Only during the day do they use carbon dioxide, at night they respire as well. They do not use as much as you do, but still are competing for oxygen at night as well.

Would converting a bedroom to a second bathroom add or subtract value to my home?

May 3, 2010 - 1:26 pm 4 Comments

I have a 5 bedroom home (more like 4 bedroom and a den.) I was wondering if converting one of the upstairs bedrooms into a second full bathroom would increase or decrease the value of my home?
My father is a contractor so i would pay minimal cost. Would it be more appealing to the market as 4 bed 2 bath or 5 bed 1 bath?

Increase especially if it is part of the Master bedroom. Most buyers want at least a 2 1/2 bathroom house
